Sculpture is three-dimensional artwork created by shaping or combining hard materials like stone, clay marble, metal, glass, or wood. Some famous sculptures include Michelangelo's Moses, housed in the church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome. The sculpture was commissioned in 1505 by Pope Julius II for his tomb.
The first known sculptures are from South Asia made during the Indus Valley civilization (3300–1700 BC). They are found in sites at Mohenjo-daro and Harappa in modern-day Pakistan. Later, as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism developed further, India produced bronzes and stone carvings of great intricacy, such as the famous temple carvings which adorn various Hindu, Jain and Buddhist shrines.
In Cebu City, Jet Florendo is the name to reckon with. A dentist by profession, his love for art has turned him into a full time sculptor. Florendo is without a doubt a modernist, Influenced by the works of Constantin Brâncuşi at the beginning of the century, his figures are abstractions of nature. His exhibit at Kukuk's Nest North in Talamban will open on January 14 at 9pm. Anyone can view his works until January 31 at the Diwata Galeri that is open from 9am to 10 pm.
